Sermon: “Being Humble”. Jesus had a good sense of humor. He used hyperbole in His stories. People enjoyed hearing Jesus. He always had a smile on His lips and a twinkle in His eye. Jesus told people that when you are invited to a banquet take the lowest place and let the host ask you to take a place of more honor. This advise is practical and funny. Then Jesus told the host to only invite the poor and crippled to their next banquet and they would be blessed. Greatness is not measured by how much to have or earn; it is measured by how much to give away for others. Jesus humbled Himself for us on a cross. God exalted Jesus. Rev. James L. Sermon: “Feeling Like a Heal.” Healing was no small deal in Jesus’ day. Either you family cared for you or you were on your own. You went to the synagogue to beg. Sabbath healing created a dilemma. The leaders of the synagogue were just regular people like us. The Sabbath was just as special to Jesus as it was to the Jewish leaders. It is hard to keep a spiritual center with all the demands on us. We need to slow down and pause before answering each demand. Do not let your everyday schedule jerk you around. Keep the Sabbath and keep it holy. On the seventh day God rested and enjoyed creation. Even the slaves, animals, and guests got the Sabbath off. This was why the Pharisees were upset when Jesus healed on the Sabbath. Jesus enters our Sabbath and heals us. Rev. James L. Sermon: “Run the Race”. “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.” (Hebrews) The church in Hebrews was full and vibrant, then negativity crept in. They were about to close the doors for good. By faith they saved the community, by keeping their eyes on Jesus. The people of the Bible were just like us, flawed. But we all have/had great faith in God. Everyone before us witnessed to their faith in God. We too will continue to witness and share the Good News. Rev. James L. Sermon: “Where your heart is”. Some say their heart is with their family, others say their heart is with their country. Some say their heart is with their work or a hobby, or a sport. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. When asked to give to God’s work, where are your priorities? If you ask God how much He loves you, what do you think His answer will be? The width of Jesus’ arms on the cross, that’s how much. Such love gives us the courage to meet the challenges we face. Rev. Sermon: “Prayer-A Risky Business”. We are often embarrassed by the immaturity of our prayers. Most of us do not pray until we’re in a jam. Through prayer we do not ask God to change, we ask God to change us. Jesus gave us a way to pray, which is The Lord’s Prayer. In it we first give praise to God, then we ask for our sustenance and forgiveness. And we forgive others. This is not a magic prayer, it is a guide for prayer. It can be used anywhere and at any time. When we pray, we do not know what the outcome will be. God does not always give us what we ask for, but He gives us what we need. We can not control God. Sermon: “Being vs Doing”. Jesus went to visit Mary and Martha. Martha prepared the meal and did all the work while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to Jesus’ teachings. All work and no pray creates a frazzled Christian. We think we have to do something to be valued. By doing harder and harder we become anxious and we no longer find joy in our doing. If we love Jesus, then we must love one another. There is a time for work, and a time for listening to and for God. Rev. James L. Sermon: “Which Side of the Road are YOU Walking?”. Inheritance is a gift, not something you earn. In today’s Gospel, the lawyer is asking Jesus how he can inherit eternal life. What does the law say? To love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. Jesus told him to do this and you will live. But the lawyer, looking for the loop hole, asks Jesus who his neighbor is. Jesus responded with the parable of the good Samaritan. Now, the temple was served by three classes of people, the priests, the Levites, and the lay ministers. So, the priest walked by thinking he was only obligated to help if the man if he was a Jew. Since he could not tell if the man was a Jew or not, the priest did not stop. The same with the Levite. The lawyer was thinking that surely there would be a good Jew in this story. But not a Samaritan. Everyone hated (was prejudice against) all Samaritans. The lawyer could not believe that a Samaritan stopped and helped the man at his own risk (there were still robbers around, and he himself could be accused of hurting the man). Jesus asked the lawyer with of the three was a good neighbor. It choked the lawyer to admit that it was the Samaritan. Real love can’t keep you from being a good neighbor. The question for us is: which side of the road are we walking? Rev. James L.
