Sermon: “Live, Love, Loudly”. Jeremiah was enticed by God. He preached and became a laughingstock. Then he said he was out, that wasn’t in his plan. But God shakes us out plans, and the fire was burning inside Jeremiah so hot that he couldn’t deny it. When we let God change the plan we can do great things with God and love at the core. Sermon: “Breaking Barriers”. Being a tax collector and being a sinner were considered the same thing. But Jesus ate with sinners and tax collectors because they needed Him and the word of God. We wait for people to come to us at church. Jesus went to the sinners where they were and reached out to them in love. Jesus breaks down all kinds of barriers to save us. He is interested in saving our souls as well as healing our bodies. Many people believe that the power of faith will heal our bodies. Jesus cares about you and me no matter the obstacles, even when others don’t think we are worthy. Jesus will come to us. When we don’t think that there is anything that can help us, even sin and death, Jesus will come to us. Rev. James L. Holy Trinity Sunday. Sermon: “We are Created for Interdependence”. On Holy Trinity Sunday we are somewhat puzzled as we think about God the Father, God the Son, and god the Holy Spirit. It makes us think about creation. Form Eve’s perspective… Eve talks to God and thanks Him for the perfect creation, but she’s lonely. God told her he would create a man, and he told her what a man was but, she could only have him if she let him believe that he had been created first. Please I’d rather do it myself! Adam and Eve had everything. They lived in a paradise but, God had put restrictions on them. The bible says we weren’t created to be independent. We were created to be interdependent with each other. Then there were children. They are completely dependent on their parents. Then they want to be independent, Please, I’d rather do it myself. We all need one another and we need god’s love and peace. Sermon: “Flying into the Future with Pentecost”. God the Father and Jesus Christ are the subject of many books in the Bible. Acts is the first time the Holy Spirit is mentioned, then it is mentioned 13 times. There is lots of cynicism now about religion. But there is lots of interest in spirituality. Spirituality is paying attention to the spirit of God. The Pentecost story takes place 50 days after the resurrection. The first Pentecost happened on the day of the Jewish Pentecost. This was a huge festival. Jerusalem was filled with people of many languages. The disciples had continued to come together behind closed doors. They were confused, afraid, and grieving. They were waiting for someone to tell them what to do next. That was when the Holy Spirit came and surprised them. The Holy Spirit created a community which was the Care we able to exchange the love of power with the power of love? Are we evangelical, enthusiastically telling others about God, with the helop of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit seeps into our lives at our Holy Baptism. It guides us through our lives and continues to renew us. God promises that the Holy Spirit will always be with us , always surprising us. That is the good news of Pentecost. Thanks be to God! Rev. Sermon: “Boldness”. In 1954, Joe Walsh bested Joe McCarthy by asking for decency, just decency. There was a high contrast between Walsh and McCarthy, about decency. Today on the 7th Sunday after Easter we are given the strength to do those things that need doing, with decency. Pentecost is coming, but what does it mean? During that time, Jesus’ followers had been through a lot. Then came the sacred chaos of Pentecost. After that the followers began preaching the gospel. The government sent a strong message that “you can believe what you want but keep it to yourselves”. Going out into the world to spread the word can be dangerous, but there are also opportunities. Those early Christians prayed to God for boldness. They didn’t ask for safety or security, they asked for boldness to spread the gospel, the love of God in Jesus Christ. God gave us the Holy Spirit as a gift so we can do what needs to be done with boldness. To leave a witness to something that deserves to be remembered, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Rev. Sermon: “Never Be Afraid”. Paul talked with the people in Athens. They believed that dead is dead. They worshiped many idols, false gods. Their gods were too small. The true God is so much larger and greater. Some of us though think of God as small and in a box. The Hebrew people knew how powerful God is. But once they built the temple, they thought He would stay in the temple and they would see Him once a week. But God is not the god of one people or nation. He is the god of everyone. Sermon: “Stephen the Martyr”. In the first century the book of Acts was written to help the new church. The story about the stoning of Stephen is not a story for small children. He was one of seven deacons to serve in the first century church. Stephen used the faith of the Jews against them. When they could not win the arguments, they had him stoned to death. During his trial his face shone and he spoke eloquently. He explained how they had missed the prophesy of the messiah. What does this mean for us and the citizens of the world today?
